The Dallas Cowboys are going through their OTA program at the moment as they prepare to do something they haven't done since the 1990s, make the playoffs three consecutive seasons.
Many feel that will be the case, and it's largely due to one thing.
Dallas pulled a fast one and traded for cornerback Stephon Gilmore and wide receiver Brandin Cooks within five days of each, solidifying immediate impact players for the 2023 campaign. However, Pro Football Focus gave praise to several other players on the roster, naming them as the team's three best.
"The Cowboys have a good mix of young players and veterans who could be on this list. Parsons has been unreal as a pass rusher, earning 93.1 and 92.3 such grades in each of the past two seasons. Lamb really took the next step as a WR1 this past season with a career-best 86.2 grade and a 25.9% wide receiver usage rate. Martin's consistent high-level play warrants a spot, although 2022 was the lowest-graded season of his career. A healthy Dak Prescott could easily be on this list as well."-Trevor Sikkema, PFF
What's special about Parsons, Lamb, and Martin is that they are prime examples of what the Cowboys have perfected over the last decade, drafting.
Parsons didn't even have a ton of pass-rush duties when he roamed Beaver Stadium for the Penn State Nittany Lions. The inexperience has turned into dominance as Parsons has more than lived up to being the 12th overall pick in 2021 with 149 tackles (33 tackles for loss) 26.5 sacks, 56 quarterback hits, six forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and six passes defended.
Parsons is a menace when it comes to making quarterbacks uncomfortable. He's flustered them with 157 pressures and 100 hurries, and it's is a big reason why Parsons has garnered back-to-back first-team All-Pro honors and a Defensive Rookie of the Year award.
A year before Parsons came on board, Lamb was taken 17th overall, and the rest has been history.
Lamb only had five games with Prescott as a rookie. Despite having several quarterbacks and no consistent continuity, Lamb gained 935 and scored five touchdowns. Since then, Lamb has elevated his game enough to be mentioned with the best receivers in the NFL which was highlighted in 2022 when he put 107 receptions with 1,359 yards and nine scores, leading to a second-team All-Pro nod.
Lamb isn't slowing down any time soon, so defensive coordinators, good luck.
Martin has been the best example of steady elite play for the Cowboys since he came in 2014 with the 16th overall pick. He has eight Pro Bowl and All-Pro nods, and the only reason it wasn't nine was his calf injury in 2020. However, he did show his versatility by playing 501 snaps at right guard and 117 at right tackle when La'el Collins went down that year.
Peeling back the layers of Martin's career shows a man who has only committed 20 penalties. He's also surrendered just 136 pressures and 105 hurries in 5,237 pass-blocking reps.
They may get criticized from time to time, but the Cowboys' front office has drafting down to a science.
