NBA training camps are underway. And with a new season comes new storylines that could affect the Mavericks' success going forward. The team's recovery from the late-season injury bug is still in question. When Kristaps Porzingus can play again is up in the air. And how Luka Dončić can reach the next level in his game, are all questions that need to be answered in the 2020-21 NBA season. With all that being said, let's dive into three storylines for the Mavs in the 2020 training camp.

Offseason recovery:

The biggest injury news is tied to Porzingus and when he will be ready to play. He tore his meniscus in the playoffs and had offseason surgery to repair the tear. As it stands now, the Mavs are eying early January as his tentative return date. Meaning, Porzingus will miss all of training camp with the team.

In other injury news, Dwight Powell and Jalen Brunson are back. Both missed the NBA's Orlando bubble recovering from injury, but that time away paid off as they are ready for the NBA tip-off.

How Powell recovers from his torn Achilles is a major storyline heading into the season. Will he be the same player he was before the injury? And for Brunson, the questions is how does his shoulder respond to NBA level physicality going forward? Injuries will, inevitably, be part of this abbreviated season. Seeing how players bounce back can give you early indicators of how the team may fare going forward.

The new guys:

Dallas turned over a third of its roster this offseason. How the team integrates the new parts and pieces will be a major storyline throughout the season.

Josh Richardson brings a huge lift to a struggling Mavs defense. He also brings offensive versatility and shot creation, that the team did not have last year at the off-guard spot.

James Johnson brings toughness and work-ethic to a Mavs frontcourt. He is a consummate pro and will serve as a real locker room leader for the team. And lastly, Dallas brings in three rookies. Although, Tyler Bey will start the season on a two-way contract. Seeing how Tyrell Terry and Josh Green impact the Mavs going forward can only deepen the bench going forward.

Luka Magic:

This is the most obvious storyline headed into the season. Luka Dončić has added to his game each year he's been in the league. What is next for him is an MVP award. At 21 years old with his natural skill and shot creation ability–the sky is the limit.

The Mavs, early in the season, will go as Luka goes. Does he have enough energy and firepower to get it done in the abbreviated NBA calendar year? How has he improved his three-point shooting efficiency? And has he learned he doesn't have to do everything? All these questions are key for Luka going forward. And his play will determine the Mavs success early.
