Fans of the Dallas Cowboys have been begging for more Tony Pollard. In 2022, they got just that as Pollard logged a career-high 569 offensive snaps and added 12 total touchdowns (nine rushing scores).
Pollard is in his fourth season which means it'll be time to negotiate a potential deal to remain with the Cowboys soon. However, when Pro Football Focus ranked the top 50 free agents for 2023, shockingly, Pollard was 45th on the list.
"Pollard slowly but surely ate into Ezekiel Elliott’s workload this season as the back who clearly had way more burst and ability to break off explosive plays, with his 31 explosive rushes the sixth most in the NFL despite him working as the No. 2 back for the most part. He’s also a dynamic receiving weapon, with five explosive receptions landing him in the top 15. Clearly, he’s a big play waiting to happen every time he steps on the field, but the one knock — if you wanted to find one — would be occasional negative plays, with his 9.3% stuff rate ranking 20th highest among 67 backs with at least 50 carries.
"Dallas still trusted Elliott more in short-yardage situations and at the goal line, which is completely understandable, but we’re nitpicking here. Pollard deserves the opportunity to lead a backfield, and that opportunity may still come in Dallas."
Spielberger is certainly right. The 2022 season could be the end for Pollard with the Cowboys, but how he's ranked this low on the list is mind-blowing.
Pollard ran for 1,007 yards (led the Cowboys) on 193 carries (5.2 yards per attempt). That's wild enough as it is, but when factoring in that Pollard was one of 38 running backs with 150 touches or more and he led them all with 5.9 yards per touch makes his season unreal.
The running mate of Pollard, Ezekiel Elliott, led the Cowboys with 12 rushing touchdowns this season, but a lot of those came from short yardage. Pollard, however, scored 75% of his touchdowns from 10 yards or more which is the second-highest percentage for any running over the last decade with more than 10 scores in a season.
Pollard shouldn't necessarily be the top free agent going into next season, but having 45th out of 50 is insane, he's too good to be that low.
