The optimism for the Dallas Cowboys offense in 2021 largely stems from two factors: the expected return of quarterback Dak Prescott behind center and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore calling the plays.
Prescott is assumed to make a full recovery from the ankle injury that he suffered in week five against the New York Giants. That should not come as a surprise, as Prescott is known to be extremely competitive to pair with an impressive work ethic.
As for Moore, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is a hot name in the coaching world. People are taking notice of his work with the Cowboys offense and how the team still managed to score 30 or more points in three of the final four games of the year — without its franchise signal caller. Dallas rewarded their play-caller with a three-year contract extension.
Moore's alma mater, Boise State, has already come calling, but the 32-year-old took his name out of consideration to be the head coach at the program that he became a legend at. Cowboys fans breathed a sigh of relief when that news broke, but they may have to hold their breath once again.
Philadelphia Eagles appear to be interested in Moore.
While Moore turned down an opportunity on the collegiate level, it appears that he may be garnering interest on the NFL level. It was reported on Thursday that a division rival has inquired about the Cowboys' offensive coordinator:
Furthermore, ESPN's Ed Werder added that the interview will not be a virtual meeting, like many have been during this year's cycle due to COVID-19 concerns.
This is an important factor, because it shows that there is at least some level of interest from the Eagles side of things. After all, why would they waste meeting in person, when Zoom exists?
Some have speculated that the Eagles are using this an opportunity to pick Moore's brain and learn a little more about the ins and outs of the Dallas Cowboys — specifically their offense. Philadelphia will likely interview more than a handful of candidates, so it would make sense to at least sit down with a bright mind in their own division.
The Eagles are in a messy situation right now, specifically when it comes to the quarterback situation.
Carson Wentz looked anything but a starting NFL quarterback this season, while Jalen Hurts flashed early before struggling down the stretch. Philadelphia also has salary cap concerns and an aging roster, but figuring out the quarterback position has to be priority number one for the franchise. That, again, would make sense why the organization would have Kellen Moore on its radar.
As for the Dallas Cowboys, it is crucial for the franchise to keep Moore. Not only is Kellen Moore a bright offensive mind, but he also creates a dynamic pairing with quarterback Dak Prescott. Prescott appears comfortable with Moore's offense and play-calling, evidenced by his strong start to the 2020 season.
If Kellen Moore were to leave for the Philadelphia Eagles job, it would not only make the Eagles potentially better, but it would also hurt the Dallas Cowboys. For now, it seems unlikely that Philadelphia offers Moore their head coaching vacancy, but it is worthy of keeping tabs on.
