The Dallas Cowboys are doing a lot well on defense in 2022. One is sacking the quarterback, as they lead the NFL with 29 through the first seven weeks.

Last week, another link in the Cowboys' pass-rushing chain started to make its way back to action. Defensive end, Tarell Basham, had his 21-day practice window activated after being out with a quad since Week 1. However, Pro Football Focus thinks that the Cowboys should explore a trade with the Tennessee Titans involving the veteran, with a 2023 sixth-round pick as compensation.

Brad Spielberger on potential Basham trade:

"With the emergence of second-round rookie edge defender Sam Williams, who had two quarterback pressures that both went for sacks in Dallas’ Week 7 win over the Detroit Lions, the Cowboys just continue to add juice off the edge. Williams now has six quarterback pressures on 29 pass-rush snaps over the past three weeks as he’s slowly been worked into the rotation, and he’ll likely continue to play more going forward.

"Dallas now has five quality edge defenders ahead of Basham on the depth chart, meaning he’ll basically never find his way onto the field even once fully healthy. We recommend this exact move earlier this year and still think it makes a ton of sense, especially now that Tennessee has gotten back on track with four straight wins after an 0-2 start."

Basham does bring some value with his ability to rush with his hand on the ground or standing up. Last season for the Cowboys, Basham was a solid contributor. He logged a career-high in tackles with 39 and tied his personal best with 3.5 sacks.

Unfortunately for Basham, he got injured which opened the door for others to show their value, so Spielberger is right about him possibly not seeing much playing time this season.

If recent history is any indication then this might be a smart move for the Cowboys. They have had success finding value on defense in the sixth round, going back to 2019.

That's where the Cowboys drafted safety Donovan Wilson out of Texas A&M. He's has some bad luck with injuries, but Wilson was a stud in his breakout season in 2020 and has played good football this season as a big part of the Cowboys' Big Nickel package which features three safeties.

In 2021, the Cowboys took safety Israel Mukuamu in the sixth round. Mukuamu didn't see much action with just 20 defensive snaps in four games. However, he had an excellent training camp and preseason, and filled in nicely in his first two career starts with veteran Jayron Kearse on the shelf for several weeks.

This year's draft brought another sixth-round gem to the Cowboys. Cornerback DaRon Bland, much like Mukuamu, balled out during the summer and earned a roster spot. Now, with Jourdan Lewis out for the season, Bland will be asked to increase his role and be one of the Cowboys' top three cornerbacks.

Only time will tell if the Cowboys will explore this option, but it'll be interesting to see if they land another valuable late-round asset if so.
