Fans of the Dallas Cowboys are still reacting to their first-round selection. Offensive lineman Tyler Smith was taken with the 24th overall pick, filling the major hole at left guard.

The smoke is still clearing, but there are still areas of immediate need, and need for depth. Especially on the defensive side of the ball. Unless the Cowboys plan to get creative and move around the draft, they have picks 56 and 88 to use for Day 2, and six total picks on Day 3.

Will McClay and the scouting department have earned trust in fans by following their draft boards in later rounds. Even if they're head scratchers in that moment. Luckily for us, there's still plenty of talent and value remaining.

These are the five remaining areas the Cowboys need to address in the draft.

5) Linebacker

Outside of Micah Parsons, there's questions to the depth in the room. Jabril Cox is still rehabbing from a torn ACL and Leighton Vander Esch has been inconsistent, returning on a one-year deal.

Jayron Kearse also factors into this, playing often near the line of scrimmage at the STAR position. A safety/linebacker hybrid position.

There's plenty of skill, but not much depth. It's better to grab one of these skilled linebackers to build the depth, giving more breathing room the top.

Names to Watch: Nakobe Dean, Leo Chenal, Troy Anderson, Brian Asamoah, Chad Muma, Channing Tindall, Christian Harris, Terrel Bernard, Brandon Smith, Damone Clark

4) Tight End

The Dallas Cowboys are in serious need for a tight end. Even if they hope to land a long-term deal with Dalton Schultz, there's no depth.

Blake Jarwin is gone, Sean McKeon has battled injuries, Jeremy Sprinkle is special teams/rotational player and Ian Bunting hasn't taken any significant snaps in meaningful games.

This year's draft is stocked with quality tight ends. Who knows? It's possible the Cowboys decide to live up to the Las Vegas name and double down.

Names to Watch: Trey McBride, Greg Dulcich, Cade Otton, Jelani Woods, Jeremy Ruckert, Isaiah Likely, Charlie Kolar, Grant Calcaterra, Jake Ferguson

3) Wide Receiver

Once again, the Dallas Cowboys have one sure-thing in a position group. While Lamb hasn't yet taken that next step to become a true no. 1 receiver, he's going to get more than his fair share to do it.

Michael Gallup is still rehabbing his torn ACL, leaving players like Noah Brown and James Washington as the only other receivers on the roster with a catch in an NFL game.

Wide receiver was a position that was a possibility for the first round, before taking a lineman. Expect them to address this early.

Names to Watch: George Pickens, Skyy Moore, Calvin Austin, Christian Watson, Khalil Shakur, Jalen Tolbert, John Metchie, David Bell, Wan'Dale Robinson

2) Defensive Tackle

Neville Gallimore and Osa Odighizuwa are the Cowboys starting tackles, but are both still young and developing. They can each add pressure from inside, but still struggle in run defense.

Trysten Hill might be on borrowed time, having yet to live up to his draft position. Carlos Watkins is coming off his best season of his career, but isn't the difference-maker the team needs inside. There's plenty of depth among this group, but they lack a much needed War Daddy.

Both Georgia tackles were taken in round one, and there isn't a lot of depth at the top among this year's rookies. This is a priority.

Names to Watch: Travis Jones, Logan Hall, Perrion Winfrey, Demarvin Leal, Phidarian Mathis, Neil Farrel, John Ridgeway, Otito Ogbonnia, Matthew Butler

1) Edge Rusher

This is no surprise. DeMarcus Lawrence is the Cowboys best edge rusher but he just turned 30 and is coming off only an eight-game season (playoffs included) in 2021.

The Dallas Cowboys hope Dante Fowler and Dorance Armstrong can combine to equal the success that Randy Gregory left behind. Each has been a good player in spurts, but there's a glaring drop off in consistent pressure, even with two players instead of one.

Chauncey Golston is a solid run defender, who can play both edges and even flex inside, but he has yet to turn into the player Dallas needs on the edges. If he can develop his pass rush better, he can turn into a starter. Until then, he's another rotational player on outside.

Edge rusher is one of the most important positions on the field. The Cowboys have players, but lack play makers.

Names to Watch: Boye Mafe, Arnold Ebiketie, David Ojabo, Kinglsey Enagbare, Nik Binitto, Nik Bonitto, Myjai Sanders, Cameron Thomas, Sam Williams, Alex Wright, Ali Fayad, DeAngelo Malone, Dominique Robinson, Amare Barno
