The Dallas Cowboys are seeking to reign supreme in the NFC. Well, their biggest hurdle is within their division, the defending conference champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.
Both teams won double-digit games last season and made the playoffs, in large part to their outstanding defensive units. The Eagles led the league in sacks and were ranked first in pass defense in 2022. However, one prominent NFL analyst doesn’t think their defense is the best.
Mina Kines of ESPN broke down why she feels the Cowboys have a better overall defensive unit than the Eagles when league insider Field Yates was on NFL Live on Thursday.
"I agree with DeMarcus Lawrence. I don't think the gap is that big, Field. I do have the Eagles ranked higher in terms of overall power rankings. But while the Eagles offense is better, I would argue that the Dallas Cowboys defense is better than Philadelphia's, to me it seems pretty clear," said Kimes.
"This is a defense that last year finished second in DVOA, third in EPA per play, better than the Eagles in most meaningful metrics, and this offseason I actually think that they got better. They traded for Stephon Gilmore at cornerback I thought that was a perfect fit given all the man coverage they play, giving them some depth. Spent their draft pick in the first round on Mazi Smith to help sure up that run defense. And otherwise, you have continuity at all three levels and perhaps most importantly, at defensive coordinator, they retained Dan Quinn who's done a fantastic job.
"Meanwhile, in Philly, most of the losses in free agency occurred on that side of the ball as well as some coaching changes. So when you put these two units head-to-head, to me, Dallas is better and I don't think that should be a particularly controversial opinion."
Kimes brought up Lawrence because he mentioned recently that he didn't feel there was a huge gap between the Eagles and the Cowboys.
Kimes will certainly ruffle some feathers with her statement, but she backed it up with valid points.
The Cowboys forced more turnovers than the Eagles last season and gave up fewer points per game. Philadelphia has the advantage on the defensive line, and probably at linebacker, for now anyway. However, the Cowboys are better at cornerback and safety, and that's not up for debate at all.
No matter how people rank these two units, Kimes' opinion is a valid one.
