Two reasons why the Mavericks cannot get over the hump on the road

The Dallas Mavericks have been good on the road but fallen short in back-to-back games against the Phoenix Suns.
Everyone knew it would be a challenge with Luka Doncic not being in the lineup, but they had no answers on defense.
If they do not want this two-game losing streak to continue they will need their leader to be back but healthy.
With tonight's game finished, let's discuss why Dallas has struggled these past two games.
Defense is a big issue
For almost a decade now, Dallas has struggled to have reliable players who can bring a defensive presence.
Current Centers Dwight Powell and Willie Cauley-Stein are not physical enough in the paint to demand respect from opposing teams.
Suns Center Deandre Ayton only had eight points but was able to pull down 17 rebounds by himself.
That is a true definition of a player who you have to plan for on a nightly basis, Dallas does not have that type of big man.
You cannot expect to be outrebounded 53-40 and expect to win a close game.
If Dallas wants to be considered one of the top teams, the defense needs to become their first priority.
Not enough bench contribution
The Mavericks starters played well for the most part as they had four players in double-figures.
Kristaps Porzingis has stepped up in Luka's absence as he finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
Tim Hardaway Jr and Jalen Brunson both tied with 18 points, while Dorian Finney-Smith had 12.
For the bench, no one scored more than eight points and made a difference on the floor
Phoenix had three bench players with 13+ points which helped them secure another win.
Dallas has not done a good job with bringing in free agency who can make a difference.
With Niko Harrison in charge, he will have more of a hand during the free agency and draft process.
Hopefully, with his influence, he will attract top players to sign with Dallas.
What's next?
Dallas will take on the LA Clippers on Sunday and Tuesday to continue their road stretch.
This will be a tall task if Luka is not able to go in either matchup as Jason Kidd will need to be creative with his lineups.
After a great home win against the Denver Nuggets, the Mavs drop to 9-6 as these road games have effected their performances.
Hopefully the team can work on some plays and drills in practice that can give them a bit of of a edge while on the road.
