The Dallas Cowboys know a little something about betting odds. Consistently going week to week as underdogs in their matchup's ever since QB Dak Prescott's injury in game one.
Head coach Mike McCarthy knows about it as well. In his third season, it couldn't have started any worse.
- The front office barely signed any players. Even allowing key starters to walk in free agency.
- People like Sean Payton or defensive coordinator Dan Quinn are attached as candidates to take his job in 2023.
- Kelvin Joseph was tied to murder charges.
- Players like Prescott, Tyron Smith and Michael Gallup all missed/continue to miss extended time.
- Accusations of voyeurism and paternity suits hit the front office.
Anything and everything.
Despite it all, the Cowboys are 4-1 and just a game outside the lead in the NFC East. The defense is elite and the talk of the team, while Cooper Rush and the offense are consistent, not allowing themselves to be caught up. Affecting the team's success.
Is McCarthy doing enough to covet a prestigious award that has passed him by many quality seasons in his career? The NFL's Coach of the Year Award.
Las Vegas certainly thinks he has a chance.
According to Vegas Insider, who updates their odds weekly, McCarthy now has the eight best odds to win the award.
- Nick Sirianni (Eagles): +110
- Brian Daboll (Giants): +700
- Kevin O'Connell (Vikings): +1000
- Mike McDaniel (Dolphins): +1200
- Doug Pederson (Jaguars): +1400
- Brandon Staley (Chargers): +1800
- Sean McDermott (Bills): +2000
- Mike McCarthy: +2200
This is a huge development for the Dallas Cowboys head coach. Early betting odds had McCarthy as low as +4000 odds to win, near the bottom of the league.
After all that the Cowboys have gone through following the painful playoff loss, this season seemed like a lost hope. Getting worse by the day.
Credit where credit is due. McCarthy and the Cowboys are playing efficient, elite football. Possibly even at a contenders level.
If they sustain this sort of success throughout the season, McCarthy will be an unquestioned finalist for the honor.
