The Dallas Cowboys lost to the San Francisco 49ers 23-17 in the first round of the playoffs on Sunday thanks to a decision by quarterback Dak Prescott that will be talked about all off offseason.
Dallas got the ball on their own 25 while trailing by six points with less than a minute remaining in the game and no timeouts. The Cowboys immediately started moving the ball down the field. But with 14 seconds to play, Prescott made a puzzling decision that cost Dallas a shot at the win.
Prescott took off running to the middle of the field, picking up a big chunk of yardage. But Dallas couldn't get the snap off in time to spike the ball and kill the clock. Instead, the clock hit 0:00 and the 49ers advanced to the divisional round of the playoffs.
Prescott should've made more of an effort to get the ball to referee to spot. He also could've slid two or three yards earlier and saved a couple of seconds.
As the game ended, Cowboys fans showed their displeasure by pelting Dallas players with various objects.
It's never a good idea to throw stuff on the field. Never.
Typically this type of visceral reaction is reserved for referees — not the players (though I'm sure some of this was directed at officials, too).
No one in Dallas wanted to win more on Sunday than the players who took the field. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, the ball just didn't bounce their way. That's just how it goes in the NFL.
I respect the passion of the fans, but throwing things at players is certainly going too far.
Update:
There's some debate over who was being targeted. Either way, throwing things on the field is never a good idea.
