Wide receiver has been a huge topic of discussion regarding the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.

The franchise traded away Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper for a day-three draft pick. Dallas re-signed an injured Michael Gallup who will likely miss the beginning of next season. Then, Cedrick Wilson cashed-in and signed with the Miami Dolphins in free agency.

Dallas did sign James Washington to a team-friendly deal in free agency. The Cowboys also brought back special team specialist Noah Brown for depth at the position. Still, it is likely that the Dallas Cowboys draft a wide receiver early in the 2022 NFL Draft.

WHY COWBOYS COULD PASS ON WR IN ROUND ONE

Treylon Burks, Chris Olave, and Drake London are three first-round prospects at receiver that have been linked to the Dallas Cowboys leading up to the draft. Dallas is set to meet with all three wideouts, and it is highly unlikely that any of them fall out of round-one.

While all three provide intriguing options that could upgrade the Cowboys' offense, there is an argument to be made that waiting for a wideout might be the better route. There will be a number of receivers that the Cowboys could take on day two.

Potential second- and third-round targets include Skyy Moore, George Pickens, and Jalen Tolbert. There is depth in this class at the receiver position, with as many as 14 pass catchers considered to be top-100 prospects.

Unless a talent such as Garrett Wilson falls to the Cowboys, it might be better off to wait to address the position.

By waiting to add a receiver, the Cowboys would have the option to address a need like offensive line or pass rusher in the first-round. Either would be a smart route for Dallas to take.

SUCCESS OUTSIDE OF FIRST-ROUND

Additionally, there has seemingly been a high hit rate with receivers that are taken outside of the first-round in recent years. For instance, Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, DK Metcalf, and AJ Brown were all selected after the first-round in the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys themselves came away with a quality receiver in the third-round back in 2018, when the team grabbed Michael Gallup outside of the top-80 picks. Gallup, of course, earned a second contract with the Cowboys. Furthermore, Cedrick Wilson was grabbed in the sixth-round in 2019.

This isn't to say that the Cowboys would be guaranteed to find a stud outside of round-one. Nor is this is to say that Dallas would be dumb to grab a first-round talent at the position to pair with CeeDee Lamb — who the Cowboys drafted in the first-round in 2020.

However, this is to say that there is talent to be found all over the draft. If the Cowboys have a higher grade on an offensive lineman — like Zion Johnson or Kenyon Green — with its No. 24 selection, Dallas could still come away with a plug-and-play lineman and potentially a starting receiver.

Regardless of what the Dallas Cowboys opt to do, the team has some options to upgrade multiple spots on the roster. Dallas has proven to be a good drafting organization,  and this is their chance to show that once again.
