Why Dan Quinn's decision almost guarantees Mike McCarthy won't be the Dallas Cowboys' head coach in 2023

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported on Thursday that Dan Quinn has informed teams he plans to remain the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator in 2022.
According to Pelissero, six teams requested to interview Quinn for their head coaching vacancies.
This is obviously great news for the Cowboys. Dallas had the No. 7 scoring defense in the NFL in 2021 under Quinn's leadership.
Numerous Cowboys players, including star rookie linebacker Micah Parsons, were excited to learn that Quinn was staying.

With Quinn returning, it seems all but certain that Mike McCarthy will be the Cowboys' head coach in 2022. I don't think Quinn would decide to stay amid uncertainty.
Quinn's decision to return to Dallas, according to Pelissero, is rooted in his desire to win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys.
This essentially confirms that the 2022 season is Super Bowl or bust for McCarthy.
If McCarthy wants to be the head coach of the Cowboys in 2023, then Dallas better win it all next season.
A deep playoff run won't be good enough for McCarthy to keep his job. Winning the NFC Championship but coming up short in the Super Bowl won't be good enough either — especially with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton likely to get back into coaching in 2023 (and of course the Cowboys would be the logical destination for him).
Quinn's return just puts more pressure on McCarthy.
And if we're being honest, I think it all but guarantees that McCarthy won't be the head coach of the Cowboys in 2023.
It's not that I think Dallas can't win a Super Bowl — they certainly have the talent to get it done.
But the far more likely outcome is what we saw this season. And last season. And the season before. You get the picture.
The odds aren't in McCarthy's favor. He should probably go ahead and get his resumé ready in advance of the 2022-23 offseason.
