It is becoming more and more evident that the Dallas Cowboys will have a different wide receivers corps for the 2022 season.
Amari Cooper is expected to be a cap casualty this offseason, according to Cowboys insider Bobby Belt. Cooper, who is set to make $22 million in the upcoming season, appears to be headed towards being cut in the near future.
That raises questions about what the front office is doing. It is head-scratching to move on from the best wideout on the team — especially without getting anything in return. Dallas is actively weakening one of its biggest roster strengths simply to save some money.
Nonetheless, that is where things look to be headed. When adding that to Michael Gallup being a free agent and recovering a torn ACL, there is a lot up in the air.
Therefore, wide receiver is emerging as a bigger and bigger need for the Cowboys to address this offseason. Because the team is not going to pay Cooper, it is unlikely that they make a splash at the position in free agency.
The NFL Draft is likely where the Dallas Cowboys will look to address wide receiver. Whether that be in the first-round or sometime later remains to be seen.
Regardless, the Cowboys must target help at the position. Dallas cannot afford to simply rely on CeeDee Lamb to carry the passing load. That is especially true when Dalton Schultz will likely sign elsewhere and Gallup would not be able to play until late in the season.
Dallas holds the no. 24 pick in the upcoming draft. The Athletic NFL Draft guru Dane Brugler ranks six wide receivers in the top-100 prospects. That includes:
- Garrett Wilson, Ohio State (no. 11 overall)
- Treylon Burks, Arkansas (no. 13)
- Drake London, USC (no. 16)
- Jameson Williams, Alabama (no. 22)
- Chris Olave, Ohio State (no. 25)
- Jahan Dotson, Penn State
There will be receivers to be had throughout the draft, ranging from the first-round to day three of the weekend.
It is up to the Dallas Cowboys to identify a prospect or two and prevent a position that entered last season as a major strength falling into a glaring weakness.
