The Denver Broncos got themselves a good one in Ben Powers, and hopefully, his introductory interview will win the fans over as well.
The Broncos needed, and I say that with much emphasis, offensive line help. They had the worst offensive line in football last year. Well, maybe tied with the Chicago Bears. Both offensive lines on both teams allowed their quarterbacks to be sacked 55 times, the most in the league.
So, what did the Broncos do to fix it? They did what any team with a new ownership group and a bunch of money would do. They spent it. They went out and splurged in free agency, but two of those signings were on offensive linemen. One of them is Ben Powers, who is a perfect fit in Denver.
"Denver is a fit," Powers said. “It's close to home. It's a program that's ready to succeed and I'm happy to be here."
Powers is a perfect fit for Denver because of how much the Broncos struggled last season at the position he plays. Dalton Risner was previously at the position and allowed three of those sacks last season along with 29 pressures. That's not a terrible season, but it isn't great, and Powers is certainly an upgrade.
But, it's what he said that lets us know he's the perfect fit. What he said was powerful, and gives fans no choice but to believe in him.
"I'm bringing a skill set that's up there with the elite offensive lineman in this league," Powers continued. "I take pride in keeping my quarterback clean and injury free. Pass protection. Run. Pulling, I enjoy it all. Can't wait, can't wait. Met the o-line coach. The future is bright here in Denver."
The Broncos' offensive line should immediately get better from what it was last season. Powers should be a huge reason why too. I'm glad they went and pursued him aggressively in free agency because the draft isn't too deep at the guard positions.
Powers finished 2022 as one of the highest-graded pass blockers in the league at a Pro Football Focus grade of 86.5. He allowed just 12 total pressures in nearly 600 pass-block snaps. He also didn't allow a single sack.
Some may think the Broncos overpaid for this guy, but I think it was the right move.
