The Denver Broncos need more from Russell Wilson.
With a talented receiving core headlined by Jerry Jeudy and Cortland Sutton, Russell Wilson was underwhelming in his first year as Denver's starting quarterback.
Wilson finished the sub-par 2021-2022 campaign with 3,524 yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Broncos fans will be quick to point out that even Payton Manning, in his first year with Denver, struggled too. In fact, Manning was benched during his first year with the Broncos before ultimately winning a Super Bowl. In no way does this mean that Manning and Wilson are the same players, but even the great Payton Manning struggled in his first season with the team.
Now, a report from Jeremy Fowler may indicate that Russell Wilson's lock on the quarterback position may not be too secure, at least after next season. Wilson's massive contract will keep him in Denver for at least one more year, but things may be turning in the direction of Stidham taking over as signal-caller soon after.
While a long shot, Fowler discussed how much Sean Payton liked the former Patriots and Raiders quarterback. "… his arrow is moving in a direction where we feel he can become an NFL starter in our league." High praise for a backup quarterback. What's more, Payton highlighted that bringing in Stidham was "an important signing for us."
Again, this is very much Russell Wilson's job to lose. Denver has him locked in for the next few years and has given up a king's ransom to bring him to the Broncos. He will undoubtedly get every opportunity imaginable to turn things around.
Another sub-par season may have Broncos fans breathing down the front office's throat to make a change. Could we be getting close to Stidham time in Denver? Only time will tell.
