Put plainly, the previous Denver Broncos regime was a disaster. Sean Payton, since his arrival, has been vocal about wanting to change everything. From the locker room, to preseason decisions, to handling Russell Wilson, there's a different type of culture being created in Denver.
When speaking to the media, Payton highlighted yet another way in which his current regime is changing things. Specifically, how they are navigating Phase One of the offseason workout plans.
Right now, Payton's only focus is on getting his team stronger. Last season Denver was hit with one of the nastier injury bugs the league had seen. Several key starters were out substantial time or even the entire season. That's exactly why Sean Payton is having his team only focus on working out, nothing football related.
"This month is lifting and running," Payton explained to the media. "There's no meetings. When I say that, honestly, there's no football meetings right now. Phase II begins in three more weeks. We'll begin to introduce the offense, defense and the kicking game. We'll do the Phase II activities that we can do."
Per the NFL's rules, Phase I can partially consist of meetings, but Payton is going with the strategy he adopted from former head coach and Hall of Famer, Bill Parcells. The reasoning behind Payton's decision was that he didn't want players to feel like they were going through another month of football practice.
While not speaking about football may seem a little unorthodox, clearly this has worked before as evident in Parcel's success in the NFL. Payton is leaning on his past and what's worked to try and take this team to the next level.
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. It seems as though in previous years, that's exactly what the Broncos did. Unfortunately, Broncos fans know all too well the result of not changing things up.
With Payton's desire to turn everything on its head and start over from scratch, it'll be interesting to see how it plays out on game day. Payton's fingerprints are all over the team and front office, so, here's hoping sweeping changes results in success when the season begins.
