The Denver Broncos didn't meet expectations last season.

What had all the makings for a monster year fell flat with a variety of issues surrounding the team. Russell Wilson, admittedly, didn't meet the sky-high expectations, and the Broncos fans, rightfully so, were angry.

This offseason has been one of the most important in Broncos' history. Bringing in Sean Payton seemed like a direct message from the front office: the team is going to be better.

Sean Payton has the city of Denver buzzing with excitement, much like after Russell Wilson was officially traded. Now, fans are hoping the similar excitement will yield different results coming into the season.

In a slew of offseason moves, Sean Payton has made crucial decisions to protect and equip Russell Wilson. Setting up your franchise quarterback for success is paramount if you want to be competitive in the NFL.

Not only that, but Payton has made sure to put his fingerprints all over the coaching staff. A recent decision helps prove just that.

Payton, after what seemed like weeks of convincing, has brought in Joe Vitt as a senior defensive assistant. Vitt and Payton have a history together as Vitt was the Saints' linebacker coach and the interim head coach when Payton was suspended over bountygate.

Speaking on his decision to bring in Vitt, Payton had nothing but positive things to say. In fact, the Broncos head coach admitted that hiring Vitt previously was one of the single greatest decisions he had ever made.

Sean Payton will lean on Vitt to try and mimic similar results from the past few years from a defensive perspective. Denver is one of the more elite teams in the NFL in terms of defense and will look to continue that dominant trend.

If they had an opportunity to coach with Sean Payton, then it makes sense why a coach would come out of retirement. it shows that, in the mind of professional coaches, Payton is still one of the best to do it.

Bringing in more assets will never be a bad thing. While fans patiently wait for the NFL season to resume so they can get the bitter taste out of their mouths, it appears so far that Sean Payton is doing everything right.

Payton is bringing in his guys, making huge offseason signings, and now has a draft to work with. There will be little to no room for excuses coming into next season.

Broncos fans deserve better, here's hoping Payton has what it takes to give them just that: better.
