Welcome to out Week 6 Detroit Lions mailbag. One quarter of the season is over and the Lions are 4-1. They've got an interesting lineup of game ahead of them with the Buccaneers, Ravens and Raiders. Then there's the trade deadline. So there's a lot that's that could go down soon. Let's jump into our first question that's all about the deadline.
I do expect the Lions to be buyers at the trade deadline. Whether that means they are part of a blockbuster trade or a they make a couple of moves to help out, I don't know.
The reason I think they're buyers is because the Lions are in a position where you can start talking about making a run at the whole damn thing as early as this season. I just keep thinking back to what the Rams did when they were first in that position. They started making big moves to bring in big time players. That's where Holmes comes from and Les Snead (Rams GM) is who he got his tutelage under.
Plus, there's just some areas where the Lions can clean things up with a some trades.
There's a few areas where I think they can improve. They are defensive tackle, cornerback and receiver.
At defensive tackle, Alim McNeil is playing Pro Bowl football right now. If the Lions can get better next to him, this defensive line, that is already pretty good, could get even better. It could be scary good as opposed to just pretty good.
With Moseley out for the season, the Lions secondary is pretty thin right now. Cameron Sutton, Jerry Jacobs and Brian Branch are all playing well. If one of them were to go out, they're relying on Will Harris and a bunch of undrafted guys. They did sign a veteran corner in Anthony Averett on Tuesday and I think you'll see him crack the roster soon, but they could use some more help.
Receiver is one that I will place a caveat at. I think if the Lions decide to trade for a receiver, it will be a substantial one and it will be the kind of move that says "we're going for it all this year." That's the only way I see them trading for a receiver. They'll more than likely just stick where they're at. But who knows? Maybe they take a shot at Mike Evans, or someone like that, in a few weeks? We'll see.
Part of the game is that you have to go out and beat who you're supposed to beat. That's something the Lions haven't been able to do in the past. at least not like this. How many times have you looked at a rookie quarterback, a backup quarterback or a team full of injuries and licked your chops knowing that the Lions would win and then they wound up losing in embarrassing fashion? A lot right?
The Lions aren't just beating those teams now, they're beating the hell of out them. In addition, aside from the Panthers, these teams aren't really bottom of the barrel.
They did beat the Super Bowl champions in their building. That's incredibly hard to do. The Packers aren't their best, but they're pretty scrappy team that's near the middle of the pack in DVOA at 19th. They had to go win that game on the road as well. Falcons have a lot of weapons over there and the Lions stopped them.
I know this is new and old memories will make you feel cautious, but its real. The Lions are for real.
I haven't hidden my thoughts on this. I think the Lions should have had it done weeks ago. This is priority one for the Lions when the final buzzer goes off at the end of the season in February. You have to lock this guy down with the way that he's playing right now. Plus, he's still just 28 years old.
As far as the figures go, Lions fans may not want to hear this, but this dude is going to get paid. He's not just playing good football, he's playing elite football at the moment. Daniel Jones got four years and $160 million and that guy is pretty bad. That's your starting point for Goff right now. We'll see what it comes out to soon enough. Three years and $52 million isn't going to happen though.
People aren't going to like my answer, but it's no. It's just way too early to be concerned. Does he have a drop problem, yes. Can drop problems be solved? Yes.
The reality of it is that Williams has played 109 snaps of NFL football. We haven't even seen him play a full game yet. We have to give it time. It's way too early to just decided what this is right now. I
If anything, Lions fans should be psyched after what this guy put on film in the blocking department on just 30 snaps on Sunday. He's a team player out there. The catches and the highlights that everyone wants will come soon.
I think they're both depth pieces for the Lions. Averett is a guy that can contribute right away. Tight end Anthony Firkser is the guy that I find to be the interesting one. Sam LaPorta has been playing very well this season. Brock Wright and James Mitchell have not. They've both been really bad. Wright is actually the lowest graded player on the entire team per PFF. Firkser has shown to be a pretty good blocker through his time with the Falcons and and Titans. I wonder if he's able to jump Wright at some point.
Greedy Williams could be the Lions next reclamation project
Back in 2019, LSU cornerback Greedy Williams was a guy that everyone had their eyes on. Especially in Detroit. Lions fans wanted the team to draft this guy and it seemed like players on the team wanted the Lions to draft him too. It actually felt like it might go that way for a while. […]
