The NFL coaching carousel is going around pretty fast right now. All Detroit Lions fans are worried about is if that carousel will swallow up one, or both, of their team's coordinators. There's three jobs left at the moment. Let's talk about everything they've done and there could be a chance that the Lions coaching staff goes unchanged. First, here's a recap of the hiring that's been done.
- Raiders hired interim head coach Antonio Pierce
- Patriots promoted linebacker coach Jerod Mayo to Head Coach
- Panthers hired Bucs OC Dave Canales to be their head coach
- Chargers hired Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh to be their head coach
- Titans hired Bengals OC Brian Callahan to be their head coach
Falcons
Let's start in Atlanta. The Falcons have interview both Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn and the team has requested to interview both of them a second time and those interviews would be in person.
Why there's hope: The Falcons have already interviewed former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick twice and there's been a lot of smoke around the idea that Falcons owner Arthur Blank is very keen on the idea of hiring Belichick. The Falcons have not made the move yet, but it seems like a forgone conclusion at this point.
Update: The Falcons will be hiring Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris to be their next head coach. No Belichick, but no Johnson or Glenn either.
Seahawks
The Seahawks shockingly moved on from Pete Carroll after the season when he moved up tot he front office. So far, they're being awfully slow with their approach. They have interviewed six candidates. Lions OC Ben Johnson being one of them. They haven't had any second interviews though.
Why there's hope: For starters, the Seahawks have only requested to interview Ben Johnson. So Aaron Glenn is off the hook in Seattle for now. As far as Johnson goes, the Seahawks did interview him, but they're rumored to really want a defensive guy and that Cowboys DC Dan Quinn is the favorite. Especially since Quinn was a big part of the Seahawks staff that created the Legion of Boom.
The other thing is that Johnson has not been asked to have a second interview with Seattle while five others have been. Four of which are DC's.
Commanders
Here's the biggest threat. The day that the Commanders hired their new GM Adam Peters, it was reported that Ben Johnson was the top target for Peters. Johnson has interviewed once for the Commanders, but a second interview has not been requested yet.
Why there's hope: It would seem that the stance on Johnson being the favorite in Washington has changed. The Commanders are reportedly interested in following the Ravens model for success. They already hired Eugene Shen away from the Ravens to be their VP of football strategy. There's belief that the Commanders owner Josh Harris wants to continue down that road and that could open the door for MacDonald.
