Conor Galvin should be a dark horse to make the Lions roster
We've talked a lot during the preseason about how the Detroit Lions could use some offensive line depth. Both veteran tackles Matt Nelson and Germain Ifedi have looked up and down all summer long. We've talked a lot during the preseason about how the Detroit Lions could use some offensive line depth. Both veteran tackles Matt Nelson and Germain Ifedi have looked up and down all summer long. Judging by the amount of snaps that both played during the preseason, they'll probably make the roster. But there is one guy that really showed something during the preseason.
That's rookie Connor Galvin. The former Baylor tackle went undrafted this year, but found himself getting signed by the Lions right after the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft concluded. The Lions gave him a shot to play in each preseason game and he really flourished.
How much did he flourish? Pro Football Focus had him as the highest graded Lions player during the preseason. He graded out at 79.2 on 65 total snaps.
Here's how he graded out for each game:
- 72.4 on 19 snaps against the Giants
- 65.7 on 20 snaps against the Jaguars
- 78.8 on 17 snaps against the Panthers.
The thing that's obviously holding him back is that he just didn't see as many snaps as everyone else did. While he saw 65 total snaps during the preseason, Nelson and Ifedi saw 114 each. The Lions are clearly more interested in having veteran depth than they are having undrafted rookie depth.
That's going to play against him for sure. That's why he's a dark horse and not a lock. He should be a lock for something else though. That's the 16 man practice squad. The Lions have to keep this guy in the building and get more looks at him.
He might not initially make the Lions 53 man roster this year, but there's a chance that he could make it later in the year if injuries happen or next year. I don't think Ifedi or Nelson are long for this team. Galvin could be the backup of the future.
He's a name to keep an eye on over the next few days. I'm very interested to see where things go with him.
Final Lions’ 53-man roster prediction
The preseason is finally over for the Detroit Lions. The next stop is the regular season. After watching camp and preseason games, I think I have a good handle on the Lions 53 man roster. Let's go ahead a jump right into it. Here's our final 53 man roster prediction for the Lions. Quarterback (2) […]
