Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff is coming off a mega game this past Saturday. He completed 70% of his passes for 278 yards and five touchdowns. It was a much needed performance a week after arguably his worst performance in Detroit.
There was some concern that generated from the fan base that the Lions wanted Goff to tone down his play style and be ultra safe after throwing seven interceptions in the last seven games. That's not case though according to Lions head coach Dan Campbell. What he wants to see Goff do is cut it loose.
"The most important thing is man cut it loose." Campbell said. "That's the message. It's not the other way. Because he's, I go back to this he's he's one of the biggest reasons we're sitting at 10 wins right now. It's him is playing loose, man. Just trust what your eyes see, play the progression and throw with conviction. And that doesn't mean something bad may or may not happen. I mean, something may happen. That's life in the NFL. We got to find a way to overcome it, but I'm sure we sure don't want him tightening up and worrying about all that. So just go out like he did last week. Put the work in and cut it loose."
This would be the time to do it for sure. As for the turnovers Goff had recently, Campbell doesn't fault him for those. This is actually the second time he's gone out of his way to absolve Goff from the three turnovers against the Bears in Week 14.
"Honestly he's done a good job of taking care of the ball. We got Chicago, we came back and won that game and then Green Bay Thanksgiving. But honestly out in Chicago, I don't count those interceptions. I'm just bringing that up again. And the center quarterback exchange, that wasn't just one person there. So he's done a good job."
It's hard to fault Goff for two fourth down picks that looked more like desperate arm punts than they did interceptions from a team that had a chance to get back in that game. He sort of lobbed both of those out there and prayed for the best. As for the fumbled snap, it takes two to tango on those. Both guys worked together to fail on that one.
The big thing that will help Goff cut it loose is that he should have hos fully healthy offensive line going into this incredibly important game. He's only had this group five times this year, but when does, this is what his stat line looks like in those five games:
102-148 for 1,270 yards, 13 touchdowns, one interception and no fumbles. He averaged a 68% completion percentage and a rating of 118.7. Clearly having his guys block for him is a good thing.
Jameson Williams is proving to be an overcomer
Detroit Lions second year receiver Jameson Williams has gone through things that most pro's haven't had to. Especially in their first two years in the game. There's a lengthy list of obstacles that he's had to get over. Some were his fault and some were things that he couldn't avoid. But he's shown that he […]
