Detroit Lions Mailbag: Can Zonovan Knight carry the load?

Welcome to Week 3 of the NFL season and Week 3 of our Detroit Lions mailbag. We've got a ton of good questions this week. Let's not waste anymore time and get right to them.

I'm going to go with Knight for a few reasons. One of them being that he is a lot like David Montgomery when it comes to style. He can lower the shoulder and power through, but he can also make you miss. As a matter of fact, he played seven games last season from Week 12 to Week 18. He was second in the league in forcing missed tackles during that time.

I've been high on Knight for a while and I just haven't seen it from Craig Reynolds outside of what he does on special teams. I don't think Knight goes back to the practice squad. Even after Montgomery returns.

I don't think it's a talent problem. Most of the guys on this line showed they could rush the passer last year. I think it comes down to strategy. The Seahawks just knew what they were doing in this game and the Chiefs had their lineman false starting and lined up liek slot receivers all night. I know those sound like excuses, but it is what it is. This is a fixable issue.

I think all the linebackers struggled on Sunday and that's why the Seahawks kept going in their direction all day. I think there's a good chance you'll see a lot more of Barnes and Campbell as the year goes one. Barnes has been really good this season and Campbell has been really good at stopping the run. As a matter of fact, they've both been great against the run. But they also both need to work on their coverage skills.

At the end of the day, I don't see Glenn getting fired unless the wheels really come off this thing over the next few weeks. But, hypothetically, if it happened, I would think that Kelvin Sheppard would be the next man up. He's showed that he's a good leader of men. Can he schematically run a defense? I don't know. I don't think Campbell would take over the play calling there at any point.

You have to believe that the Lions will work out some guys this week and maybe see if one or two of them could be signed. As for guys on the practice squad, edge rusher Raymond Johnson III could get called up and I think defensive lineman Quinton Bohanna is another guy that could move up too. Both have some NFL experience. Johnson was considered a bit of shocking move by fans when the Bengals waived him.

Hey its Sam Tighe! If you're a soccer fan, I highly recommend reading his work and following him.

I think it's actually pretty simple and it wasn't anything scientific. The Seahawks beat the Lions with pace. They were up tempo all game long and threw short passes as fast as they could. When they got in trouble, Geno Smith used his feet to wiggle out of it. The Lions just never adjusted and I think they just got winded after a while.

I think it's Taylor Decker. Look, they're all bad, but this team loves to run the ball and Decker is a part of that. While they ran well on Sunday for the most part, you could see Decker's absence affecting things on the field. That David Montgomery fumble probably doesn't happen if Decker is in place and Sewell is protecting the right side well enough that the Lions don't have to rely on a tight end to pick up the slack and then miss the block.

I would say there's a good chance of that. We saw Brad Holmes make a big move at the deadline last year when the Lions traded TJ Hockenson away. What will that trade be? I don't know. I think there's chance you make a move for Chase Young or Mike Evans at that point depending on where their teams are. I'm sure a lot of teams around the league will be looking to do that very thing.

If that's not the case, then it could be something small. Like the Lions trade for a guy that can come in at start somewhere, but isn't like a big star or anything. A guy that football heads will be super excited about and casual fans will be in the dark about.

Lions’ Jared Goff is an elite NFL quarterback, here’s why

So on Sunday night I decided to make a bit of a proclamation about Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff. He's been outstanding for a while now and I think we've reached the point where he's only going to get more expensive with every game he plays. It's time to extend Goff soon. Like right now. […]
