Detroit Lions Mailbag: Is Starling Thomas for real?

It's been a couple weeks since we've been able to do a Detroit Lions mailbag. Things have been busy with the Lions. Now that it's slowed down a little bit, let's jump into one.

Absolutely. Thomas has showed up as an undrafted player and has been performing like a guy that belongs. I'm sure there will still be some rookie bumps in the road as there would be with anyone, but Thomas has shown he can play this game. With Moseley out, the Lions are going to have to push Thomas into a position where he's going to have play right away. how much we'll see of him remains to be seen, but you will definitely see him.

It's hard to say no to this. It's for sure the deepest we've seen it since the Lions had Glover Quinn, James Ihedigbo , Don Carey and Isa Abdul-Quddus. We'll see if this unit can be as good or better than that unit. One thing this unit holds over the 2014 one is youth. That 2014 group was almost completely gone a couple years later. This group has time to grow.

We already saw a little bit of it on Wednesday. C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Calvin Ridley is one to watch. They went at each other a lot on Wednesday. While it's a friendly battle, it's still a battle between two players that want to win.

I look forward to see if these two jaw jack some more with each other on Thursday. It's too bad the Lions won't be playing any starters on Saturday.

That's certainly something that could happen at some point during the season. I think the Lions will more than likely start off the season with a lot of three safety looks with Gardner-Johnson, Kerby Joseph and Tracy Walker. Over time you'll probably start to see Branch more and Walker less. This is a good problem to have.

I've seen some Lions fans say that the team should just trade Walker now and I can't disagree with that more. You want depth and leadership and Walker brings both of those elements to the table.

It's never boring. It seems there's always something happening and you have to be on your toes. I love that. I also get to spend more time with Lions fans and that's awesome because this a great group of people.

David Montgomery might be the new heart and soul of the Lions

The Detroit Lions shocked everyone when they essentially re-did their entire running back room after the success of the 2022 season. They made two huge moves. One of them was drafting Jahmyr Gibbs with the 12th pick. The other was signing former Bears running back David Montgomery. We've heard and seen a lot about the […]
