Detroit Lions mailbag: Which Lion will surprise the most?
Here's the Detroit Lions mail, it never fails. It makes me want to wag my tail. When it comes I want to wail – Mail! Yeah, Blues Clues and stuff. We missed last week Lions mailbag with all the craziness of the start of camp, but we're back now with a bunch of good questions. Let's […]
Let's jump into it.
I keep going with tight end James Mitchell. He keeps popping in my head anytime I think about a player that could be ready to break out. Maybe it's because I was so high on him coming out of the draft and I don't want to be wrong? That could be part of it, but there's a reason I was so high on him. His athleticism and ability really jumped off the page to me. I think he has a great sophomore season now that he's fully healed from injury.
No they don't. The thing about Houston is that we don't really know what he can do yet. We know he can rush the passer on pass rushing situations, but we don't know if he can do anything else. That's what the Lions are trying to figure out at this point. There plan, at least for now, is that they'd like to try him out at Sam linebacker.
If he can add some extra stuff to his game, we'll see Houston get used a lot more and maybe even become a full time starter that doesn't come off the field. That could take time though.
This is a tough one. Before the Denzel Mims trade, I would have said yes without question because the Lions need a big bodied X receiver. Now that Mims is here, he sort of makes Green a little redundant. Then there's the rise of Dylan Drummond and and the fact that Trinity Benson has had a decent camp.
Ultimately, I have to say no at this point. I think he definitely makes practice squad and could even see the field in relief if there are injuries, but I don't think he initially makes it.
I think the ceiling is a lot higher than it was last year. That's for sure. I think this team could find themselves in the middle of the league when it comes to defense. That's the ceiling at this point. That's quite a jump for a team that was dead last in defense a year ago.
As far as the floor goes, I don't think they could get worse than what they were last year, but they could still be bad. There could be rookie walls, sophomore slumps and other things that could prevent them from being a better unit. As of right now, I think they're a unit that has the possibility of hitting their ceiling rather than their floor.
It's looked pretty good so far. Goff may have really benefited from working with a quarterback guru during the offseason. There's a better touch there and he's even launching it better. His highlight reel throw to Jameson Williams on Wednesday really showed how far that arm has come.
Yes he will. I'm calling it right here and now. We have not seen the last of Penei Sewell catching passing. A lot of teams have a play in the playbook for the big guys and I think Ben Johnson probably has one too. Sewell will score a touchdown this season.
