Detroit Lions named a good fit for a top remaining free agent
A national media outlet named the Detroit Lions as a good fit for a top free agent tight end
The Detroit Lions don't have a pressing need at tight end, but it's a position they could choose to upgrade through free agency.
For now, the Lions appear content to run it back with Brock Wright, Shane Zylstra, and James Mitchell in 2023 (Wright and Zylstra are exclusive-rights free agents and they were tendered contracts this week by Detroit).
If Detroit wants to take a big step forward as they compete for the NFC North in 2023, they might want to consider signing a top tight end.
Pro Football Network thinks the Lions should try to sign free agent Dalton Schultz to bolster their tight end room.
From PFN: Schultz provides an answer, and if any of the young players continue to step up, that’s a nice bonus. The Lions have gone all-in on the trench positions over the past few years and have begun to invest outside of those areas. Schultz would be a great next step in that progression.
Schultz is still just 26 years old and he's only a year removed from the best season of his career.
The former Stanford standout, who was asked to block a lot in college, is still one of the better tight ends in the league. If he's willing to sign for a reasonable contract, he could be a great addition to the Lions' roster.
Other teams, however, will certainly be in the mix. The Green Bay Packers and Cincinnati Bengals are two franchises expected to show some interest in Schultz as both have a major need at tight end.
Landing Schultz over the Packers would be particularly satisfying for Lions fans.
