The NFL preseason is almost over for the Detroit Lions and everyone else. We are just one week away from August 29th cutdown deadline.
Things are going to be different this year. In the past, teams have had multiple cutdown days in order to get their roster from 90 players to the allotted 53 players. This year the cuts will all happen on the same day. That's next Tuesday.
All 32 teams will have until 4PM E.T. to get their roster down to 53 players. The cuts will likely come in waves that day until we know the full story at around 4PM.
Keep in mind that there isn't just one way to remove a player from the roster. There's a handful of ways and you could see all of the, from the Lions on Tuesday.
Cut: Here's the simple of waying of doing it. Teams simply cut a player and that player will either be placed on waivers or will sign to the teams practice squad.
Released: Players that have played at least four years in the NFL will be released instead of cut. They will immediately hit free agency.
Waive: Players who are not vested veterans can be waived. A vested veteran is a player is any player that has not accrued four seasons in the NFL. In this case the player would hit the waiver wire and may or may not be claimed the following day. If they're not claimed, they become free agents.
PUP or NFI: You'll definitely see this from the Lions on Tuesday. The PUP (physically unable to perform) and NFI (Non Football Injury) lists are a way that teams can remove injured players from the roster and still keep them under contract. Look for guys like Hendon Hooker and Emmanuel Moseley to pop up on these lists.
So there you go. We'll see you on Tuesday. We'll have a cut tracker set up for you then and you'll be able to stay up to date on all the news as it comes in.
