Buccaneers coach puts Jared Goff in same category as Tom Brady and Peyton Manning

Sunday is a big game for the Detroit Lions. The 3-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers are no joke. They've looked like a playoff team all season long. One of the big reasons they've succeeded this season is because of their defense. A defense that's co-coordinated by former Lions linebacker, and Detroit native, Larry Foote.

Foot was asked about Lions quarterback Jared Goff this week and he offered up an interesting comparison to a player that he's seen an awful lot of during his career as both a coach and a player.

“I remember [when] he was drafted because I was in Arizona. His only bad year, in my opinion, was probably his rookie year. With [Sean] McVay in his second year, he just took off. He’s a good, savvy quarterback. What’s unique about him [is] I put him in that group with [Tom] Brady and [Peyton] Manning as far as the play action – they sell it, they do a good job of selling it. As a linebacker, that can be tricky, because it looks the same. He’s making every throw and he’s a No. 1 pick.

I mean, he is the engine that makes it go over there. He has been playing great ball. As you get experience in the league – not turning the ball over, throwing touchdowns, commanding the offense. He was always very accurate. He is a competitor. He is playing great for them.”

That's a big comparison and who would know better? Foote has coached Brady as a member of the coaching staff when Brady and the Bucs won the Super Bowl in 2021 and he's played against him several times, including in the playoffs. That's high praise.

Is he right though? Let's look into that a little bit. Here's the career play action stats for both guys.

Tom Brady: 304-483 for 4,106 yards, 31 touchdowns and nine interceptions. 62.9% completion percentage and 103.6 rating.

Jared Goff: 434-629 for 5,457 yards, 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. 69% completion percentage and 106.5 rating.

Peyton Manning's play action stats are not listed on pro football reference for some reason.
