NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Wednesday afternoon that the NFL is gearing up to announce a handful new suspensions for violating the NFL's gambling policy this week.
More specifically, Schefter used the words "season-long suspensions." This likely means that the those who will be suspended were betting on NFL games.
The Detroit Lions have already been hit with suspensions earlier this offseason when C.J. Moore and Qunitez Cepeus were handed year long suspensions and were subsequently released by the Lions. Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill each received six game suspensions for betting on non NFL games. Berryhill was recently released as well.
Things may not be done for the Lions when it comes to suspensions. Back in May, Kalyn Kahler of The Athletic reported that the league was investigating a fifth member of the Detroit Lions. Here's what she had to say.
"The NFL is investigating a fifth player on the 2022 Detroit Lions roster for a potential violation of the league’s gambling policy, league sources told The Athletic.
The Athletic is not naming the player at this time because the investigation is ongoing. The player currently under investigation was not a prominent member of the 2022 team. He has yet to be interviewed by the league’s investigator. The player’s agent declined to comment when reached by The Athletic, as did spokespersons for the NFL, NFLPA and the Lions."
That's all we know about it at this point. There has yet to be an update. So there is a chance that the NFL may have found there was no wrongdoing or there was not enough evidence of wrong doing. They also may have been waiting for all other investigations to finish up so they could do everything at once.
We do not know who this player is at this time, but the report does note that the player in question was not a prominent player on the Lions 2022 team. There could possibly be a chance that said player doesn't even play for the Lions anymore.
The Lions have handled all of this incredibly well and plan to make sure that the team does better going forward. The NFL has also taken strides to prevent this from happening again.
We'll keep you updated as we learn more on this story in the coming days.
