The Detroit Lions will be entering uncharted waters in the 2023 season as Dan Campbell’s bunch go from the hunters to the hunted.
The Lions won’t be sneaking up on anybody in the upcoming season. Detroit finished the 2022 season with an 8-2 mark in their final 10 games, highlighted by a win at Green Bay which cost the Packers a postseason berth.
Detroit has enjoyed a fruitful offseason by adding talent through free agency and in the draft. So it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that the Lions are currently the favorites in the NFC North.
NFC North Odds, per BetMGM:
- Lions: +130
- Vikings: +325
- Bears: +325
- Packers: +400
While winning the division should be the team’s priority, Campbell should have some added motivation as well. After all, he was snubbed from the NFL Coach of the Year honors, which is not something he wouldn’t ever admit to caring much about.
Campbell's snub is still so egregious looking back on it months later.
But that doesn’t mean Lions players and fans alike will forget about it. Interestingly enough, oddsmakers believe it’s Campbell’s award to lose heading into his fourth season at the helm.
Coach of the Year Odds, per BetMGM:
- Dan Campbell: +800
- Sean Payton/ Matt Eberflus: +1200
- DeMeco Ryans: +1400
- Frank Reich/Robert Saleh/Pete Carroll/Mike McDaniel: +1800
It’s worth noting that Wayne Fontes was the last Lions coach to take home this particular award in the 1991 season. Campbell has clearly earned his place in the center of the discussion. Although these are only preseason odds, it’s fantastic to see oddsmakers respect what the Lions have built and are continuing to build under Campbell’s guidance.
