Lions need to jump on Darius Slay when he finally hits free agency
The Lions can fix a major issue with one quick signing
The Detroit Lions have already done themselves a massive service on the defensive front by signing free agent corner Cam Sutton, but one of the worst secondaries in the NFL doesn't get fixed overnight.
Sutton immediately figures to be the CB1 for the Lions in a room that is still extremely young, but the win-now mentality for the Lions shouldn't stop there.
This team has a legitimate shot to win the division with a few more simple moves, and going after another proven corner on the free agent market looks like the best place to start.
Given the very high likelihood that the Lions can get one of the two best players in the 2023 NFL Draft that isn't a corner, making sure this position is addressed before that day is key.
This should all bring Detroit's attention back to Darius Slay.
While Slay was a bit of a question mark for the Lions as a trade target, there is no reason on the planet why this team shouldn't at least try to land the new top free agent on the market.
The fit just makes far too much sense. Slay and Sutton would immediately revolutionize the position group for the Lions, a move that could dramatically improve overall defensive effectiveness in 2023.
This duo with a couple of key draft picks and the rest of that young core would make the Lions sneakily one of the best teams in the league, and Slay wouldn't even be too pricey to prevent the team from looking in other areas.
If there is even a chance that this is possible for the Lions financially, they need to jump on this as soon as they can.
