David Montgomery figures to make immediate impact for Detroit Lions
The Lions are going to get plenty out of their newest addition.
The signing of David Montgomery is an underrated an awesome move for the Detroit Lions.
Montgomery wasn't the hottest name on the market based on his final deal, but that doesn't mean the Lions made anything less than the right decision.
This move is going to help substantially in both the short and long run.
In the long run, this could take pressure off the team with its second pick in the first round.
If running back Bijan Robinson is available at 18, which already seems like a rather large if, the Lions don't have as large of a need with Montgomery right now.
No one should say that this locks anything down for the future or should prevent the team from going after the position in one of the later rounds, but a pick in the first round at the position when you already have what should be a talented run game is unnecessary.
Montgomery and Robinson would likely be an awesome one-two punch. Unfortunately, a running game like that isn't what kept the Lions out of the playoffs in 2022, and a move like this gives the team more freedom to find guys that can bolster this defense for years to come.
As far as the short term is concerned, Montgomery is a good running back.
A few years in a weak Chicago offense with little in terms of an exciting rushing scheme has made Montgomery seem worse than he actually is.
Still, despite all of the question marks on that team and all the areas that the staff has let its players down, Montgomery has been remarkably consistent as a runner and as a receiver, and he has also been able to stay healthy during his career.
Montgomery has played in at least 13 games in all four years in the league and has never put together less that 1,000 total yards in any of those seasons.
Pairing a player like this, who has been the pinnacle of consistency, with one of the best passing attacks in the league is going to work wonders for this Lions offense.
Some fans may feel upset that Jamaal Williams is no longer with the team, but it won't be long before people see this move for what it really is; an upgrade.
