David Montgomery signing shows the writing on the wall for D'Andre Swift
The end could be near.
The Detroit Lions have been very busy in free agency, and frankly, they're killing it.
Brad Holmes has been able to find perfect fits in key positions, and while the team did lose a fan-favorite in Jamaal Williams, they were able to stem the bleeding well with the signing of David Montgomery.
It might take time for other people to come to the same overall conclusion, but this is an upgrade for the Lions with their RB1.
Everything beyond the top of the depth chart is where this starts to get a little murky.
D'Andre Swift was the RB2 for the Lions last season, and much like the rest of his career, he was decent.
Rarely terrible or great, Swift was able to serve as a quality change of pace option out of the backfield.
As the young back out of Georgia heads into his final season under contract, the Lions will have some big choices to make, and that could bring on the end of this partnership.
Swift is far from being a bad back. His averages over his career are actually quite good (4.6 yards per carry and 7.7 yards per reception on decent volume) and overall numbers like total touchdowns (25 in three years) do stand out, but trying to get a player like this to take a team-friendly deal can be difficult.
The Lions clearly don't see Swift as a RB1, but it also stands to reason that Swift may want to see what he could become as a player with a team that would give him this chance.
The Lions signing David Montgomery didn't do much to close the distance between these two groups.
Detroit could then complicate this relationship even further by going after a running back in the 2023 NFL Draft, a move that actually makes a lot of sense on paper for a team that would like to have as many options as possible to head the team in this area in the future.
If the Lions are able to hold out for one of the later rounds to take a guy that fits as the RB3, it makes sense to keep Swift and hope that there is a path towards a future.
However, the addition of a player like Bijan Robinson or any of the other high-tier backs in one of the first few rounds could make it awkward for the Lions very quickly.
What this really all boils down to is a team putting its money where its mouth it. The Lions may say that the RB1 job is anyone's to earn or that they love Swift, but if they really did feel this way, Detroit wouldn't have given the money to Montgomery.
There is still time for all of this to change, but smart money is on D'Andre Swift not being on the Lions for much longer.
