The Detroit Lions surprised everybody with an aggressive high-flying passing attack just a season ago. The Lions have plenty of weapons at the wide receiver position, but one big fish just landed in the free agency pool.
The Arizona Cardinals recently released five-time Pro Bowler DeAndre Hopkins in a move made to clear salary cap space. Hopkins has the ability to turn a good offense into one of the NFL's best, so it's no surprised the Lions have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for one of the sport's greatest talents.
Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and Marvin Jones Jr. headline a dangerous three-headed monster at receiver. But with Williams out for the first six games of the season due to a suspension, Detroit would greatly benefit by adding a player of Hopkins' caliber.
Hopkins is a player that still generates interest from just about every team in the league with a need at wide receiver. Lions head coach Dan Campbell was asked about a potential pursuit of three-time All-Pro, but made sure to hold his cards close to the vest.
“Yeah, I’m not going to comment on that one," Campbell responded when asked about the idea of adding Hopkins.
“But I like our receiver room. I think we have a good mix of different types of guys. I think it is important, really in your skill position, between tight ends, backs, and receivers, that you have a mix of different types of skillsets. And I feel like we have that.”
Campbell and Lions GM Brad Holmes have worked in tandem to assemble a roster that is capable of winning the NFC North in 2023. Of course they like their own guys, but Hopkins is a game-changer. He takes the Lions from a divisional favorite to a Super Bowl contender.
The Lions are in position to make some serious noise with or without Hopkins. There are plenty of moving parts when dealing with a free agent as talented as Hopkins is, but the Lions owe it to themselves to at least kick the tires on the potential future Hall of Famer.
