The Detroit Lions are doing its due diligence at one key position with the 2023 NFL Draft right around the corner.
The Lions have spent most of their time (and money) upgrading the secondary during free agency. While Detroit was atrocious against the pass last season, its run defense wasn’t much better.
The Lions ranked 29th in the NFL in run defense, which is an area many expect GM Brad Holmes to fix in the draft. One possible answer could come in the form of Toledo DL Desjuan Johnson.
The Draft Network’s Justin Melo reports that Johnson's top 30 interview with the Lions was recently completed.
Johnson can play on the interior of the defensive line. as well as the outside. In his four seasons with the Rockets, Johnson registered 42.5 tackles for loss and 13.5 sacks.
It was at the East-West Shrine Bowl where Johnson caught the eyes of many evaluators. A combine snub, Johnson was one of the most difficult defenders to block all week.
At six-foot-two and 280 pounds, Johnson has the size, athleticism, and strength to wreak havoc against the run and pass. He currently projects as a late-round pick, but his skillset could help him find a role early in his rookie campaign.
If Johnson is on the board when Day 3 begins, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Lions pounce on the opportunity to upgrade their defensive line.
