Welcome to the dead zone Detroit Lions fans. OTA's and Mandatory mini camp are over and for the next few weeks, things are going to be quiet in Lions land as we prepare for the start of training camp.
As we make our way towards camp, we're going to do a deep dive into the Lions entire roster. We'll be doing it section by section and player by player and go over the expectations for each player going into camp.
So far we've already covered interior defensive linemen, edge rushers and linebackers. Today We'll be talking about the cornerbacks.
Cameron Sutton

The Lions cornerback room is neatly a completely different place this season. The team finally has guys that can definitively take the top spots at corner. That's exactly what's expected of Cameron Sutton at camp.
Sutton has shown that he is a great communicator and great leader with the Steelers. Now it's time to bring that much needed assets to a group that's really struggled to mine both of those things out of its talent in the last few years. Sutton should be the top dog by September if he isn't already.
Emmanuel Moseley

Moseley was a big part of that great 49ers defense until he tore his ACL in Week 5 of the 2022 season. The expectation for him in terms of the season is that he takes that CB2 role and flies with it. It's no given for him.
He's going to have to compete at training camp and make sure that he can show that he's over the ACL injury. The latter shouldn't be too hard. Players have been coming back from this injury at a solid rate in recent years. The second one might be an issue because there is a very hungry player right on his heels.
Jerry Jacobs

There is no player on this team that is more sure of himself than Jerry Jacobs. The thing of it is, he might just be right about all of that.
The former undrafted rookie just keeps rising and rising. He's played very well since he got a shot to make the 53 man roster in his rookie year and he hasn't wasted that shot. The expectation is that Jacobs challenges Moselsey for that number two spot and that challenges him hard. Don't count your chickens at CB2. Jacobs could very well come in and take it.
Will Harris

What a turnaround it's been for Harris. It wasn't long ago when Harris was looked at as the problem with the Lions cornerbacks room. He struggled a lot for a while. Since Aaron Glenn got a hold of him, things have been a lot different.
Harris is now a reliable part of the team. His camp expectation is that he remains that reliable part of the team. Look for Harris to get his fair share of snaps in the nickel and lets see if he's able to continue his improvement.
Saivion Smith

Smith was coming along nicely in 2022 before he suffered a very scary injury against the Patriots in Week 5. Smith injured his neck and needed to be brought off the field via ambulance.
The good new is that Smith is back and he's been cleared to participate at camp. The expectation for Smith is that picks up where he left off in 2022. Aaron Glenn must have really seen something in Smith. He made him a starter for that game against the Patriots and he was to be a bigger part of the Lions secondary going forward. Let's see what he can do this year.
Starling Thomas V

Thomas is one of the undrafted rookies that has a real chance at finding a spot on the 53 man roster. He had a decent college career at UAB and looks like a good project player.
His work is going to be cut out for him, but the expectation right now is that Thomas could come in and steal away spot and get some playing time in his rookie year.
The Fringe

The Lions have a few corners that could challenge for a roster spot, but the reality is that these guys have a better chance of making the practice squad. Chase Lucas is the leader in the clubhouse for that kind of spot. The Lions drafted Lucas in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft and so far he's looked like seventh round pick. We're still waiting to see what he can really do out there.
Steven Gilmore, Kahlil Dorsey and Jarren Williams will all have to do their best to make sure it's them instead of Lucas. Williams is a guy to look at since he did play a couple games for the Lions last season and they felt it was necessary to bring him back.
