It looks like the Detroit Lions may make it a bit longer before they finally address their backup quarterback position.
Jared Goff is the obvious number one, but who will sit behind him on the bench is one of the last questions remaining for Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell.
Detroit doesn't need to rush on this area, but it stands to reason that they will likely target at least two quarterbacks to fill out the roster; one in free agency and one in the draft.
The free agent can basically be any veteran that can sit behind Goff and help him read defenses and evaluate the game on the fly, but the third quarterback should be a project piece that could turn into something down the road.
Enter Dorian Thompson-Robinson out of UCLA.
DTR isn't going to shoot up draft boards or cause a bidding war at this point, but that doesn't mean there isn't something to like in his game as a long-shot guy with traits.
Expecting anything crazy in year one would only lead to disappointment, but as mentioned, the traits are there and the biggest weakness can be tuned up by a team with a great offensive staff.
Starting to see why this works?
Thompson-Robinson has a strong arm, is decently mobile, and put together an impressive fifth season in 2022.
The ability to throw and move on the run comfortably is becoming a very important trait in the modern NFL, and Thompson can become one of those guys that can spot start and move the chains effectively if he can have the right staff take the time to work on his reads and decision-making.
The Lions are the perfect team to give DTR a place to grow without any immediate expectations. The rookie QB would learn behind Goff and a veteran while he develops and could then give the Lions another option on the roster when the team finally has to make a decision on Goff.
It may not be perfect, but a late-round pick here isn't much to invest in a guy that could become something interesting down the road with the right training.
