The Detroit Lions have the opportunity to solve a few different problems on the roster early in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Lions have four picks in the first two rounds and are poised to make some major noise.

Detroit had a tremendous free agent frenzy and was able to answer a handful of questions on the defensive side of the ball. With the draft arriving at the end of April, the Lions are taking a close look at one player who would fill the largest remaining void on the offense.

It’s no secret that the Lions are thin at the tight end position. After trading T.J. Hockenson to the Vikings, Detroit returns three tight ends with minimal NFL experience.

Brock Wright figures to be the leader of the pack, though he registered just 18 receptions for 216 yards and four touchdowns in 2022. Shane Zylstra and James Mitchell each totaled 11 receptions last season while Derrick Deese has yet to log a snap in the NFL.

Detroit’s answer to this problem could come in the form of Georgia TE Darnell Washington Jr. Aaron Wilson reports that Washington is set to visit with the Lions this week.

An excellent run-blocker with extreme athleticism in the passing game, Washington would be able to create an instant impact on the Lions offense. Many experts believe he will hear his name called in the second round. Along with the picks at No. 6 and No. 18 overall, Detroit also possesses picks at No. 48 and No. 55.

If Washington is on the board when the Lions go on the clock, it should be a no-brainer for GM Brad Holmes. Detroit would be able to kill two birds with one stone by drafting a generational talent to fill a position of desperate need.
