Everyone knew the Detroit Lions were going to be trading a running back during the weekend as soon as they selected Jahmyr Gibbs with their first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.
The room just wasn't big enough to hold David Montgomery, Gibbs, and D'Andre Swift. Swift was on the final year of his deal and failed to live up to his lofty expectations, so he always made the most sense as a trade piece for Detroit.
Now, the Lions have finally found a partner with a team that had already made a lot of sense. Swift is now heading to the Eagles to join a roster that is looking more and more like the Georgia Bulldogs every day.
Again, this one always made way too much sense for anyone to be surprised by the move as a whole. Swift had no role in Detroit after the first pick was made, and the Eagles had just lost their starting running back in free agency.
Any picks for the Lions would be a win when they already killed their leverage by drafting Gibbs, and the Eagles could roll the dice on a a guy with high upside like Swift to make the most of their wide-open Super Bowl window.
Regardless of the compensation, this is a good move for two teams that could be competing for the NFC Championship this season.
