Detroit Lions set the clocks back with first-round picks

No one ever likes a naysayer, especially on the first night of the NFL Draft, but one has to ask what is actually going on with the Detroit Lions tonight.
Not only did the team use its first pick on a position with arguably the least value in the sport, but they followed that move up with a second pick that is equally-ineffective in terms of value but on the other side of the ball!
There are essentially two real positions outside of special teams that you don't draft in the first round in the modern era; running back and linebacker. The Lions just took them both at 12 and 18.
Don't get us wrong, Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell can both become excellent players in the NFL, but neither needs to come off the board so early in an NFL that values both positions beneath all others.
Linebacker, especially those that play the way that Campbell does (in a traditional fashion) have less value than their counterparts that are smaller, faster, and better in coverage. Stopping the run matters less than stopping the pass.
Campbell could've been a Hall of Famer if he played in the 90s. Sadly, those days are long gone, and the Lions would have still found a starting-quality LB to improve their defense in one of the later rounds.
Gibbs' game is better for the modern NFL as a pass-catcher, but people have been building arguments for years that show why taking a RB in the first round is a major mistake.
Taking one of these positions with a plethora of picks in the first few rounds is one thing. Taking these two positions specifically in spite of all the evidence and data from across the league that their value lies in later rounds is just silly by a front office that should know better.
Much like Gibbs, hopefully Campbell is able to prove us wrong, but neither of these picks tonight made the Lions any better for a playoff run, and that is a huge missed opportunity.
It isn't the 90s anymore. Why Brad Holmes seemed to mess that up is beyond this writer.
