The Detroit Lions look to take the step from good to great in the 2023 season. With a strong core already intact in the Motor City, the Lions’ free agency moves has them even closer to its first NFC North title since 1993.

Pro Football Focus handed out free agency grades for the moves that have been made through the first two weeks of the official league year. Having made some major splashes at positions of need, it’s no surprise to see the Lions check in with an A- grade.

Detroit is tied with the Minnesota Vikings for the highest mark in the NFC North, but on paper the Lions have had the superior offseason.

Key Additions: S C.J. Gardner-Johnson, RB David Montgomery, CB Cameron Sutton, CB Emmanuel Moseley

The Lions also managed to re-sign key contributors from last year’s team in Alex Anzalone, Isaiah Buggs, Matt Nelson and John Cominsky, along with a few others.

General manager Brad Holmes has displayed his commitment to improved the Lions’ defense, especially the secondary, by signing a few of the NFL’s rising stars. Adding David Montgomery not only fills the void Jamal Williams leaves behind, but his leadership abilities perfectly align with the culture head coach Dan Campbell has instilled.

There is plenty of time left to continue to make improvements to what many consider be the most talented group in the NFC North. The Lions’ biggest moves are likely behind them, but with four draft picks in the first two rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft Detroit is set up to be one of the league’s biggest winners this offseason.
