Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams received a six-game suspension for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.

Williams and teammates Stanley Berryhill, C.J. Moore and Quintez Ceephus, along with Washington Commanders DE Shaka Toney all received suspensions on Friday. The Lions released Moore and Ceephus following the news.

Moore, Ceephus and Toney all received indefinite suspensions, which will last a minimum of one year for betting on NFL games. Williams and Berryhill, each suspended six games, bet on non-NFL games. Players are allowed to bet on non-NFL games (NBA, MLB, NHL, college etc.). However, Williams and Berryhill are suspended because they placed online wagers from the Lions facility.

Alliance Sports represents Williams and quickly released a response on their client's behalf.

“Alliance Sports confirms that its client, Jameson Williams, has been suspended by the NFL for six games for violating the NFL’s gambling policy. Jameson takes full responsibility for his actions and is very apologetic to the NFL, his teammates and the fans and city of Detroit. However, it’s important to note that Jameson’s violation was not for betting on football but rather due to a technical rule regarding the actual location in which the online bet was placed – and which would otherwise be allowed by the NFL outside of the club’s facility. Jameson would never intentionally jeopardize the integrity of the game he loves so much and looks forward to getting back to his team as soon as possible.”

As frustrating as it might be to receive a suspension on a technicality, it is Williams’ job to know the NFL’s policy on such matters. Six games is a significant punishment for Williams, especially considering the Lions will be scratching and clawing to win the NFC North and get back into the playoffs in 2023.
