The Detroit Lions have lost a big part of their secondary on Tuesday. C.J. Gardner-Johnson is heading back to the Eagles.
Gardner-Johnson was expected to be a major piece of the Lions defense in 2023 until he tore his pectoral muscle in the Week 2 against the Seahawks. When he did eventually return, he made a big splash right away with two interceptions in six games and helped the Lions get to the NFC Championship game.
It was there where he did some questionable things that Lions fans weren't big fans of. The waving goodbye to 49ers fans in the second quarter and the personal foul on Deebo Samuel were two things that were a bit of a turnoff.
But those were minimal things in the grand scheme of it all. Gardner-Johnson was phenomenal the week before against the Buccaneers and played well against the Rams too. He was playing some of the best football of his career and that's why the Eagles are bringing him back.
Gardner-Johnson ultimately didn't fit what the Lions want to do at safety in the future and that's have a rotation. He'll be much better off being back with the Eagles where he can have a chance to be their top guy over there.
