Detroit Lions wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. didn't stay away from the team for too long after signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars back in 2021. Jones makes his return to the Motor City in 2023 after the Lions inked the playmaker to a one-year deal worth $3 million.
However the Lions wideout has an opportunity to fatten his pockets even further with a productive season. Included in Jones' contract is a total of $2 million in available incentives. In order to take home some extra coin this season, Jones must first meet certain benchmarks.
Let's take a look at what Jones needs to accomplish to capitalize on the opportunity to boost his bank account.
| Incentive | Reward |
|---|---|
55 receptions | $200,000 |
65 receptions | $200,000 |
75 receptions | $200,000 |
700+ yards receiving | $200,000 |
850 yards receiving | $200,000 |
1,000 yards receiving | $300,000 |
5 receiving TDs | $200,000 |
7 receiving TDs | $200,000 |
10 receiving TDs | $300,000 |
It's important to note that Jones' single-season career bests include 76 receptions (2020), 1,101 receiving yards (2017) and 10 receiving touchdowns (2013). In 2022 with the Jaguars, Jones recorded 46 catches for 529 yards and three touchdowns.
Although Jones was signed to be the team's third option at receiver, Jameson Williams' six-game suspension provides a big opportunity for early season production. If Jones can hit the ground running, he should have a solid chance to hit a handful of these marks.
At 33 years old, Jones' best football is likely behind him. However there is plenty of room for him to make a sizable impact in the passing game. If Jones is able to elevate the offense and reach some of these incentives in the process, the Lions would happily fork over the extra money.
