Not every signing in the offseason is going to be flashy, even if you are the Detroit Lions.
The Lions have been killing it since free agency opened a week ago, and now the team has locked down one of the last remaining holes with a good signing, even if it isn't the most exciting.
Backup quarterbacks rarely are.
After proving himself behind Jared Goff during one of the best offensive seasons for the Lions in years, Nate Sudfeld is back to help the team out with its 2023 playoff push.
Some fans may have hoped for someone with a bit more upside as a player, but they need to realize just what a move like this brings to the table.
The saying 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' matters here. Jared Goff's success in 2022 was due in part to having a backup that was able to speak the language of the scheme and help him make adjustments on the fly.
Sudfeld can do this based on his experience with the team, and now this duo gets another year together to keep growing.
Look at this as a total commitment to Jared Goff and the playoff push this year.
Don't expect the Lions to just stick with two quarterbacks for long, but it is probably fair to reason that these two guys are going to be the ones wearing their helmets on Sundays.
