The Detroit Lions appear poised to take a major leap forward in 2023.

Detroit nearly made the playoffs last season after going 3-13 the previous season.

After making a few key offseason additions (like bolstering the secondary), the Lions should be one of the teams to beat in the NFC in Dan Campbell's third season leading the franchise.

With Aaron Rodgers leaving the Green Bay Packers for the New York Jets (when that move eventually happens), it leaves the door open for the Lions to win their first NFC North division title since 1993.

CBS Sports isn't ready to predict that Detroit will win the NFC North, but they do think the Lions will make the playoffs in 2023 for the first time since the 2016 season.

The national sports media outlet picked Detroit as one of six "new playoff teams" in 2023.

From CBS Sports: You'd think the Lions were fresh off an actual playoff run, the way they've drawn league-wide respect this offseason. Remember, they weren't far from earning just that, with their Week 18 upset of the Rodgers-led Packers. Jared Goff still has his limitations, but Dan Campbell and Co. have truly built a well-rounded lineup here, surrounding the veteran QB with reliable, workmanlike starters up front and at the skill spots. Best of all, the much-derided secondary now looks completely different, with Cameron Sutton and C.J. Gardner-Johnson bringing added physicality to their "D." Are we positive the Vikings, who went 13-4 in 2022, are presently a class above them in the NFC North?

The Vikings will be the Lions' top competition in 2023. And for now, Minnesota is the team to beat in the division.

But Detroit absolutely has the talent to win the NFC North. After watching the Lions make significant progress in each of Campbell's first two seasons, there's no reason to think that 2023 will be any different. It would be a surprise if the Lions don't end their playoff drought this fall.
