Lately they've been wondering what the hell is going on though becasue the Lions have been taking things slow with Gibbs through the first four games. This shouldn't be anything to be worried about in my opinion. It's common for good teams to take their time with guys. I know there's idiots out there that wish that Montgomery would get hurt so they could get their Gibbs points now, but they're idiots. They'll likely be idiots regardless of the snap count.
One guy, who is definitely not an idiot, is Chargers running back Austin Ekeler. He talked on his Yahoo Sports podcast on Tuesday about why he thinks David Montgomery is seeing a lot more carries and why the Lions haven't fully unleashed Jahmyr Gibbs yet.
I can't think of a better player to weigh in on this than Ekeler for multiple reasons. The first one being that this guy is probably going to be a coach at some point. He's always had a very deep understanding of the game and is a good leader. The bigger one though is that there isn't a more comparable veteran running back in the league for Gibbs than Ekeler. They play a very similar style of football.
Ekeler is the glass ceiling for Gibbs in my opinion. I think he can be that good someday. That is, of course, until he breaks through the ceiling and gets even better. The guy is special. Things take time though. All we've seen from him is good things. Just wait until the Lions throw that wrinkle fully into their playbook. Be patient.
