The Detroit Lions are signing veteran tight end Darrell Daniels off their practice squad. This could be because fullback Jason Cabinda has been hurt this week and did not practice on Tuesday. Meaning that Daniels could find himself playing fullback.
Daniels has been in the league since 2017 and he's played for the Colts, Cardinals and Seahawks. He has 61 career regular season games under his belt and 18 starts.
Daniels has a history of playing fullback with the Cardinals. He's taken 116 snaps in the back field between 2021 and 2022. While he was doesn't have any rushing yards to speak of, he's proven to be a pretty decent run blocker. He had a 60.5 run blocking grade on 154 snaps in 2021 per Pro Football Focus.
Jason Cabinda has been a fan favorite for the Lions, but he is having a very bad season this year and it just doesn't look like it's going to get any better for him anytime soon. Sunday was the worst for him. He posted a team low 38.7 PFF grade. He had a rough preseason as well. He missed on almost every pass that went his way.
I've always maintained that Cabinda has been good for the Lions, but I think that the move for him now should be to take the Shaun Dion Hamilton route and get on this coaching staff. He's a smart guy and a locker room leader. He could really put those two great qualities to work with Detroit still.
As for Daniels, he's a guy I thought had a shot to pass Brock Wright during training camp because of his strong pass blocking. Ultimately the Lions didn't do that, but they saw enough to put him on the practice squad. We'll see how he does Thursday night if he's active. My guess is that he will be.
