The preseason is nearing for the Detroit Lions. For receiver Jameson Williams, this is first shot at playing in the preseason. It's his first shot at a lot of things. Williams came in after suffering a torn ACL in the national championship game with Alabama and wound up missing the entirety of training camp. He also missed a lot more too.
"I go back to this, he's, he you know, and it's not excuse, but he hasn't practiced." Dan Campbell said. "I mean he didn't practice last year. He came in during the year and we kind of had a couple plays for him here and there. But it's not like, this is his first significant time."
There's the hope that Jameson Williams could just come in and be ready to go in year two, but in a lot of ways, this is year one for him. He's still working to get a rapport with Jared Goff and he's still working on getting used to catching the ball again. He hasn't really done that since he was in college. At least not live against competition.
That's exactly why the Lions are planning to make sure that he gets a ton of reps during upcoming preseason games.
"It'll be imperative. I mean, it's, he's going to, we're going to douse him with a ton of game reps. Campbell said." He needs that, you know, he needs that, you know, as he does practice, but man, and I'm telling you, as with anybody, the more reps he gets, the more time on tests, the more consecutive practices and reps he can put together, he'll just grow."
This really is an important time for Williams considering that after training camp, he won't be able to even practice with the team until after three weeks of the season and won't be able to play a game until Week 7 against the Ravens. So getting in as much as he possibly can now will help him in the long run.
The Lions will play their first preseason game next Friday against the New York Giants. We don't know how much we'll see the starters out there, but it seems like we'll see plenty of Jameson Williams.
