The preseason is chugging along for the Detroit Lions. They're headed into their second game on Saturday against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Who they have also been going through joint practices with. If you're hoping to see starters play on Saturday, that's not going to happen.
Dan Campbell went on the Stoney & Jansen show on 97.1 the Ticket this morning and said the Lions starters will not be out there on Saturday. On top of that, he also said a few rookies might sit out too. Who that will be is unknown at this time because he didn't specify, but you have to think that's Gibbs, Branch and LaPorta.
This should come as no surprise. Campbell sort of alluded to this on Wednesday in his presser when he said something to the effect of joint practices are for starters and preseason games aren't. So the starters got two days of work this week, they don't need to play in this game.
Will we see them at all this preseason? That remains to be seen. Back when there were four preseason games, the third game was always dubbed the dress rehearsal game and you would see the starters come out and play a half at least. Now that there's only three games, that seems to have changed. That third game has sort of become that fourth game where it's the last chance game for a lot of guys.
For what it's worth, none of the starters played in that third preseason game last year.
