The Detroit Lions seem to be everybody’s favorite dark horse heading into the 2023 season. However, one national media outlet still isn’t taking the team seriously.
Pro Football Focus released its pre-draft power rankings on Friday. Despite making major splashes in free agency to improve both sides of the ball, PFF is throwing shade at Detroit.
The Lions, who are the odds-on favorites to win the NFC North according to BetMGM, check in at No. 13 on the list. The problem is that there are multiple NFC teams in front of Detroit who simply don’t belong.
The Minnesota Vikings, a team that has arguably gotten worse over the offseason, are slotted at No. 8 while the Tom Brady-less Tampa Bay Buccaneers somehow rank 11th.
From PFF: "The Lions looked to add veterans to their young team, especially on defense, signing cornerbacks Cameron Sutton and Emmanuel Moseley and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.
Compare running backs Jamaal Williams and David Montgomery in the graphic below — Montgomery performed better than expected in terms of rushing yards; he will be a good fit for the Lions and may even be an upgrade."
There is an argument to be made that the Lions have a top-5 roster in the NFC. General manager Brad Holmes has had a tremendous offseason, especially considering the team’s additions in the secondary.
Ultimately, the football world still needs to see the Lions having consistent success in order to believe the team is a legitimate contender. Detroit proved that it is one of the teams to watch for after finishing the 2022 season 8-2 in its last 10 games. In what is expected to be a weak NFC North, the Lions have a chance to claim its first division title since the 1993 season.
